Abstract

BACKGROUND

Dentistry is considered an art and science, an art that involves the use as well as manipulation of various materials and science which includes the knowledge and application of these materials for the general welfare of the patient. Dentistry has evolved throughout the years through various technological advancements and the incorporation of newer materials into existing ones which have led to greater success and also better treatment options and techniques. The use of gold is not new in dentistry; it is one of the earliest used dental materials. The beneficial features of the element include anti-bacterial and antifungal properties. Gold is also one of the most biocompatible biomaterials; its use has been observed in the management of dental caries, periodontal disease, implant dentistry and also diagnosis of cancer.
